Digital accounting made simple for city cathedral

With such a huge amount of digital accounting platforms available to choose from today, often businesses who self-select a software without taking advice on which would best suit their needs, end up with an expensive package that just doesn’t quite do the job.

As a must-see attraction in the North West, Chester Cathedral is a vibrant community of worship within an ancient abbey offering popular experiences from heritage tours to falconry displays. Having already made steps to introduce digital accounting to the organisation, it had been working from Sage200, a powerful business management system offering stock management and top-level reporting. While it served a purpose, there were alternative Sage products available which were much more suited to the Cathedral’s needs.

Ian Gee, finance officer at Chester Cathedral, had identified that Sage50 would be a more supportive alternative for the organisation, so took to Google to find an expert in Sage software. He came across Heather Stockton, one of Champion’s business advisory specialists who is a qualified Sage Expert.

Sage Expert status means Heather has the skills and knowledge to help clients understand how to use Sage programmes – including Sage50 – more effectively in order to streamline their businesses and maximise profitability. She has advanced knowledge in how the platform helps customers improve their security, reporting, scalability and error-free financial computing – something the Cathedral needed to implement across its café, shop and falconry, its commercial activities.

Ian said: “I specifically wanted a Sage Expert to help us transition from Sage200 to Sage50 and Heather has more than delivered. She has shown us how to use the platform for automatic payments, reports and bank feeds, which will save us valuable time as we will no longer have to repeat all these processes each month.

“Our organisation is split into two ‘companies’ – Enterprise, which covers our shop, café and falconry, and Cathedral, which encompasses everything else, but which has more complex tax requirements. Heather advised us on how to set up these two separate needs as individual companies within Sage, and we have successfully transferred all the Enterprise accounting facilities to Sage50. The next step will be replicating this for the Cathedral accounts, and thanks to Heather’s support we feel much more experienced and equipped to do this.
