The Solution

Degree 53 has a complex ownership structure, which meant that we had to pay particular attention to linked and partner enterprise legislation.

Following 15 months of correspondence with HMRC’s R&D unit, our specialist tax and R&D advisors were able to present a strong case and prove that Degree 53 should be classed as an SME for the purposes of R&D. This was a huge success for everyone involved and secured Degree 53 the extra tax relief, which was the difference between an SME R&D claim and a large company R&D claim.

“Champion have been brilliant for our business. The tax benefit we’ve claimed back through R&D has made a huge difference and changed the way we invest in new technologies. Most of what we do is bespoke development for our clients and it’s great to have an R&D partner that’s focused on us. The entire process with HMRC was lengthy, but Champion stuck at it and were determined to overcome any barriers that prevented us from being an SME.”
