David Herd – Senior Tax Advisory Consultant
David began his career at Champion’s Blackpool office in 2010, where he achieved his ACCA qualification. He then moved to our Manchester Head Office in January 2015 and subsequently achieved Chartered Tax Adviser status.
David now heads up Champion’s Research & Development (R&D) Team in Manchester, using his experience as a Tax Advisor to help clients identify opportunities to reduce their Corporation Tax liability. David provides both advisory and full service R&D packages that cater for small and medium-sized businesses, who may only want help starting their claim and larger businesses, who may want us to handle their entire R&D claim process year-on-year, from start to finish.
David says: “Often clients think they’re not eligible for R&D. It’s a great feeling talking to these businesses who then realise their work qualifies and they’ll be eligible for relief.”
In addition to R&D, David provides clients with a range of accounts and tax advice and support, delivering Champion’s ‘all under one roof’ suite of services.

Martin Frain (MAAT) – Tax Advisory Consultant
Martin transferred to our R&D team in July 2018 as a Tax Advisory Consultant, having first joined Champion as part of our Contractors division in March 2010.
Based in the Manchester office, Martin’s experience includes working as a Client Services Manager, overseeing the administration and umbrella payroll teams. Joining the accounts team in February 2017, Martin was responsible for preparing annual accounts and VAT returns for limited company contractors.
Before joining our expert R&D Team, Martin also supported Champion Contractors with its expansion into Scotland, helping open the Falkirk office in March 2018 and provide staff training.
Martin says: “Clients often think it’s too good to be true to be claiming R&D relief, but still so many eligible companies are failing to reap the taxation rewards from their continued investment into research and development activities.”
Having completed his AAT qualification in 2016, Martin is furthering his professional studies and is currently working towards ACCA.
